How can I (or my child) become a member of the library Leidschendam-Voorburg?
You can join the library at the information desk. Library staff will ask for your identity card. Payment for your library card can be made in cash or by your switch card (only in Leidschendam and Voorburg), or by direct debit.
If you want to make your child a member of the library you will need to show similar identification bearing the child's name and date of birth. Parents are asked to fill out an application form. This form is available at the information desk or downloadable here (pdf, 25 kb). Please print the form, fill it out and bring it when registering your child.
Why would I become a member?
- A library card will open up a whole new world.
- You can make your choice from amongst the 150.000 books, dvd's, magazines, cd's and other materials in the Bibliotheek Leidschendam-Voorburg.
- You can use your library card in all three locations of the library: Leidschendam, Stompwijk and Voorburg and also in both locations of Bibliotheek Rijswijk.
- Members enjoy a discount on the readings and workshops that take place in the library on a regular basis.
- Members of the library can get a library card at any other Zuid-Holland public library for only € 5.
- Members can make use of the national inter-library loan system and have access to an incredible 35 million books, cd's, lp's and music dvd's.
- You can consult valuable digital databases in the library:
- a full-text archive of newspapers and magazines;
- all the renowned tests from the Consumentenbond (consumer's organization);
- reviews on Dutch literature from 1900 up to now;
- summaries and author's biographies of Dutch and foreign literature.
- You can consult a few digital databases on your computer at home if you log in with your libray card:
- Keesing's Historisch Archief, the famous historical archives summarizing international news
- The archief of the Dutch Newspaper de Volkskrant
- In a few months also Pressdisplay, current issues of newspapers in the original form from all over the world. So you can read digital replicas of newspapers on your computer at home
- Each week you can use the Internet for one hour free of charge and after that it's € 0,45 each 15 minutes. Non-members will pay € 0,75.
- All your possible queries are answered at the information desk or through the on-line service al@din.
- A library card from the Bibliotheek Leidschendam-Voorburg will cost you at the most € 36,00 per year (+ a once-only 2,50 registration fee). For this amount, the price of two new books from the store, you can take out books for free for a whole year.

Holders of an 'Ooievaarspas' (local discount card) pay no subscription or registration fees.
Library card for partners of members 18 years of age and older (Partnerpas)
- Partners of members 18 years of age and older who own a valid library card of Bibliotheek Leidschendam-Voorburg, and live at the same address (provable) as the member, are allowed to buy a 'partnerpas' for € 5,00. This includes the registration fee of € 2,50.
- The validity of the 'partnerpas' is equal to the first library card.
Is it possible to extend the lending period of the borrowed materials?
- Lending periods for any item may be extended once, if no one else has reserved the item in question.
- When a fee is charged to borrow an item, this fee will also be charged for a renewed loan.
- The new lending period takes effect at the moment of renewal.
How do I extend the lending period?
Renewals can be made:
- By visiting the library and ask the library staff to execute the renewal for you or do it yourself on a computer in the library.
- Through the website: fill out your library card number and PIN code (your day and month of birth in four digits. If you were born on July 4 your code will be 0407). To renew please follow the instructions.
- Alternatively you may extend the lending period by phoning the library during opening hours (070-3872626). Library staff will then execute the renewal for you.

Can I borrow more books for a longer period of time during the holiday season?
You can always borrow your items for an extended period. Please indicate you wish to do so at the check-out counter. Costs for this double lending period are free (plus possible borrowing charges for dvds etc.).
The maximum of 15 items per library card is applied throughout the year.
How do I know my library PIN code?
Your library PIN code is necessary to access your personal page. You need the code when checking on Mijn gegevens to see which items are borrowed by you, when the return date is due or if you want to extend the lending period.
Your PIN code is always used combined with your 10-digit library card number.
The PIN code is based on the day and month of your birth, in four digits. If you were born on July 4 your code will be 0407.
You can change your PIN code on Mijn gegevens.

Where can I use my library card?
Your library card is valid in the three libraries of the Bibliotheek Leidschendam-Voorburg and in the two libraries of Bibliotheek Rijswijk:

If you are a member of the library you can get a free 'library passport' (bibliotheekpaspoort) at the information desk. This passport will allow you to be a member of any other public library in the province of Zuid-Holland for only € 5,-. Read more (in Dutch).
What are the opening hours?
The libraries in Leidschendam and Voorburg are open 6 days a week (not on Sunday's). The Stompwijk library is open only on Monday's, Tuesday's, Wednesday's and Friday's.

Can I return my items outside opening hours?
The libraries in Leidschendam and Voorburg have a return box next to the main entrance. In this box you can return items at any time. Items returned outside of the opening hours will be removed from your library card the following working day.
Can I return my items at another location?
The libray tries to limit transport of materials between library locations. Therefore we ask our members to return items to the original locations. Your cooperation is much appreciated.
What can I do on the computers?
On most library computers you can search in the library catalogue. Is the material you want part of the library collection? Is it available now? Where can I find it?
Designated computers offer you more:
- Word, Excel and Powerpoint (only in Leidschendam and Voorburg, free)
- browse internet (€ 0,60/15 minutes)
- use of databases which are freely available only within libraries:
- Krantenbank, Dutch national newspaper archives from the 90's up until yesterday
- Tijdschriftenbank, magazine archives from Dutch magazines: Vrij Nederland, Opzij, Quote, Elsevier, Fem Business en Psychologie Magazine
- Consumentengids, online edition of consumers' association magazine
- ZW-cd offers up to date and reliable information on health, handicaps and diseases

Outline of library rules and rates
- A library card for Bibliotheek Leidschendam-Voorburg
- costs € 36,00 for members from 26 to 65 years of age (12 month membership), or € 15,00 (3 months membership)
- costs € 27,50 for members from 18 to 26 years of age or 65 years of age and older (12 month membership), or € 15,00 (3 months membership)
- is free for members up to 18 years of age and for holders of an 'Ooievaarspas' (local discount card)
- New library members pay a registration fee of €2,50. Holders of an 'Ooievaarspas' pay no registration fees.
- Library staff will ask new members for their identity card (passport, driver's license, id-card, residence permit, Dutch public transport season ticket, Dutch moped license, Dutch medical insurance card). If you want to make your child a member of the library you will need to show similar identification bearing the child's name and date of birth. Parents are asked to fill out an application form
- For your initial subscription immediate payment (cash or PIN), or or by direct debit is compulsory. Renewal after 12 months is easy: a payment slip is sent to your home address
- Your new library card may be used immediately
- Your library card allows you to take out 15 items at the most
- Child library cards may only be used to take out children's books other items from the child department
- Books, cd-roms, cds and dvds are free to borrow, but there are also several categories of material available to be borrowed for which a charge is made, like 'toptitels', 'hit-cds' and 'hitdvds' (these are materials which are very new)
- Most items can be borrowed for four weeks at a time; hitdvds, hit-cds en 'toptitels' can only be borrowed for 1 week. At the check-out counter you will receive a ticket stating the return date for each item
- Lending periods for any item may be extended for 1 time
